Shamanism, One of the Most Amazing Subjects You can Learn

One of my biggest challenges in training future Shamans is to be able to successfully convey that there is no “cookie cutter” method to shamanism. In that sense shamanism is more an art than a science. I teach the fundamentals so that my students can hone their own skills and with those develop a unique technique. In my opinion this is one the most amazing gifts shamanism offers humanity. It is a practice that is so open to embracing the individuality of each one of us and working with us to co-create. It does not mold anyone into a sub aspect of their humanity, like you see in other specialized academic professions.

A question I get asked frequently is, “how can just a couple of classes make me a Shaman?”. This is a misunderstanding based on what is recognized as a Shaman in remote native tribes. In small communities where everyone greatly depends more on one another for their survival, identities are more defined than in our vastly populated urban settings. You could say it’s statistical. If in the community someone is seen from her youth as having unique characteristics, this person will have more chances of being recognized as a Shaman’s apprentice than in a big city. Shamanism is not about learning, it is about being. In the training you learn how to be and the rest happens naturally.

Many of my students are surprised with the first classes. It is not what they thought it would be. We are not doing anything esoteric and mysterious. The basis of shamanism is how life is perceived. There is an understanding of what a “good life” (Sumaq Kawsay) is. Once this concept is integrated everything else just falls into place. Health, Happiness, Healing, Wealth, Success, etc. all makes sense from a natural perspective, nothing is unattainable. It does however require certain shifts in perspectives, but this is fine and understood as a process. Everything as seen from a shamanic perspective is energy in vibration especially one’s self. This in itself becomes the main factor in changing not just one’s reality for the better but others just as much. People are very comfortable with habitual thinking, and once it is understood that this creates most of their reality, then the path to improvement and healing becomes an internal one. I teach this art and this way of thinking, contact me if you’d like to know more about this ancient shamanic wisdom.
