Tawantinsuyu: The Symbolism of Four Regions in Inca Culture

“Tawantinsuyu” is the Quechua term for the Inca Empire, translating to “The Four Regions” or “The Four United Provinces.” The name is derived from “tawa,” meaning “four,” and “suyu,” meaning “region” or “province.” Tawantinsuyu was organized into four administrative regions, each overseen by its own governor, with Cusco as the central capital. These regions were Chinchaysuyu in the northwest, Antisuyu in the northeast, Qullasuyu in the southeast, and Kuntisuyu in the southwest.

In the Andean Cosmovision everything has a symbolic meaning. Shamanically speaking the Tawantinsuyu means that all concepts, ideas, opinions, etc. should be seen from a minimum of four points of view. Nothing is as it appears in this material realm. It’s scientifically impossible, since at its very essence reality is influenced by the observer and we are all independent units of observation.

A very helpful tool maintain inner alignment in everyday living is to focus on what you are thinking about, then what your feelings are about it, also what actions you’ve taken regarding it and finally to come up with a very precise definition of it. This simple exercise aligns the energetic motion centers of the human condition. This process allows the more passive aspects of your whole to participate and cooperate in a more harmonious life.

Recently I was asked how one could find a purpose. My answer was not direct, because in my opinion, regardless of what you are doing in life, you are within your purpose. A more empowering stance is to orientate and align yourself, from there to choose a mission that supports harmony within your immediate environment. This is the way of Pachamama (Mother Nature). This is the way of Life.
