One of the most fascinating things I observe in my work as a Shaman with clients is that people rarely tell you everything through their words. In fact, some of the most important information is often found in what appears to be a completely unrelated answer.
Imagine asking someone about a particular family member, a business strategy, a relationship, or a challenge they are facing. Instead of answering directly, they begin talking about something else entirely. Most people assume the conversation has simply drifted off course. I do not.
Over the years, I have learned that when a person consistently redirects a conversation away from a specific topic, something important is happening beneath the surface. The subconscious mind is stepping in and attempting to communicate.
The subconscious has one primary responsibility: maintaining the purpose of life. It wants to keep a person’s internal world in evolution. Whenever a question touches an emotional wound, an unresolved conflict, a fear, a hidden belief, or even an unrealized desire, the subconscious will redirect attention elsewhere towards a symbolical more real answer.
To the trained observer, the detour is the message.
Many years ago, I stopped focusing exclusively on what people were saying and began paying attention to where their energy was moving. Whenever a conversation suddenly shifts direction, I ask myself a different question. Instead of wondering why they are changing the subject, I become curious about what the original subject represents.
The answer often reveals something profound if you know how to read the energy behind the story.
A conversation about a business partnership may suddenly become a conversation about a person’s father. A discussion about finances may unexpectedly become a discussion about health. A question about relationships may turn into a story about childhood.
At first glance these topics seem unrelated.
Energetically, they are deeply connected.
The subconscious does not organize reality the same way the conscious does. It organizes reality through emotional associations. What appears disconnected logically may be directly connected energetically.
This is why, in shamanic work, listening goes far beyond hearing words.
We learn to observe movement.
We observe where attention travels.
We observe where energy expands and where it contracts.
We observe what topics create flow and which create obstruction.
When viewed this way, every conversation becomes a map.
The moment a person redirects away from a particular issue, they are showing us the perimeter of something important. They may not yet be consciously ready to look directly at it, but their energy is always pointing toward it.
This understanding has been incredibly valuable not only in healing work but also in leadership, relationships, negotiations, business partnerships, and personal growth.
Many leaders (and psychotherapists) make the mistake of pushing harder when they encounter resistance. They demand direct answers. They seek a breakthrough.
A more effective approach is to become curious and follow the path through the portals of inner truth.
Observe the detour.
Study the diversion.
Ask yourself what emotional landscape exists beneath it.
When you understand the underlying energy, you gain access to a deeper level of truth than any direct answer could provide.
The shaman is not attached to the first answer.
The shaman is interested in the entire energetic pattern.
Words are important, but patterns are more revealing.
When I sit with a client, I am not only listening to what they say. I am listening to what repeatedly pulls their attention away. I am observing what subjects carry charge, what stories repeat themselves, and what themes emerge despite the person’s conscious efforts to ignore them.
Very often, the breakthrough comes not from the question that was asked, but from understanding why it could not be answered directly.
The subconscious is always communicating.
The question is understanding its language.
If you have found yourself going in circles around the same challenge, relationship, business decision, or life transition, it may be because the real issue is hiding behind the issue you think you are addressing. Sometimes it takes an experienced guide to help identify the deeper pattern and bring it into conscious awareness.
For more than seventeen years, I have helped individuals, entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders uncover the energetic dynamics operating beneath the surface of their lives. My approach is caring, practical, and deeply personalized. Together, we explore not only what is happening, but why it continues to happen and what shifts are needed to create meaningful transformation.
