Shamanic Power Jars: Influencing Environments Without Physical Contact

Shamans can use jars as a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes

In most of my posts here I try to convey ideas that could seem alien to certain people in a language that denotes common sense and basic academic concepts. The information below will be a little more foreign than usual, because it has to do with influencing the environment without physical contact. To a certain degree this could apply to the famous tenet: “As Above, So Below; As Internal, So External”. It could also be compared to the “Model Theory in the Scientific Method”. In other words if a “model” that represents an idea behaves a certain way, then it is logical that the “actual idea” should follow the same behavior.

There are many ways to represent an idea for Shamans, but here we will focus one of my favorites in particular. I was taught this technique by one of my first Master Shamans in the Colca Canyon Region (Colca, meaning Pleiades Constellation). When he was commissioned to heal he would first take his time to find a jar that somehow made sense to him for the idea he had in mind. Once the jar was chosen he’d spend a considerable amount of time, sometimes days, in finding small objects that could fit inside the jar. These items had to represent some part of the situation he was going to work on. Once this was completed he’d take soil from the area where the healing needed to take effect. I also saw him take soil from other areas, where for example everything was harmonious in comparison to the situation he was trying to balance. Finally the jar would be sealed and a ceremony would take place. It mostly consisted of some rattling and a lot of repeated positive statements.

The jar would be placed in some particular place and every once in a while it’d be spoken to, sung to or shaken. The duration was undetermined but somehow the Shaman knew when the improvements in the actual situation would start to take place. At some point the jar would be either disassembled, shattered or used as a planter, literally putting seeds on the soil within it. I witnessed this work be done a couple of times and eventually started doing it myself. From my personal experience, I can claim that it works, also it’s not just the external situation that gets influenced, but the actual jar will also behave and develop certain patterns within it. At this point in my profession, after a jar is prepared, within hours there will be some changes within it that foretell what may be happening externally within the actual situation I’ve been commissioned to balance. Very often, as the jar is just sitting there, and I glance its way, I just know the work has been accomplished and it is time to disassemble it. In some unique situations the jar will lack “Kawsay” (life force), to me it will be more of an object than a representation. In these cases there are usually stronger currents happening where the energy in the situation should not be assisted by the Shaman.

This is what makes shamanism such a gift to humanity. It allows human potential to participate in creation, but within a harmonious umbrella. In our foundational training we learn to understand the language of Pachamama (Mother Nature). Unlike most present human professions, we never impose human will over the well-being of Nature. When Nature acts in a way that we perceive negative, as in a disease, we understand this as communication and the need to seek balance.
