The Four Quadrants of Conscious Creation: Why Andean Shamanism Is Profoundly Optimistic

Discover the Four Quadrants of Conscious Creation in Andean Shamanism: What Is, What Can Be, Necessary Action, and Unnecessary Action. Learn how intention and consciousness shape reality.

One of the things I love most about the Andean shamanic tradition is that it is fundamentally optimistic. It does not begin with the assumption that life is happening to you. It begins with the understanding that life is responding to your evolution.

This does not mean that difficult things never happen. Challenges, losses, disappointments, and uncertainty are part of the human experience. The optimism of the shaman is not naïve positivity. It is a deep confidence that your reality is alive, intelligent, and responsive, and that every situation contains exciting pathways that have not yet been seen.

Most people become trapped in only one part of reality. They become fixated on what is happening right now. They stare at current circumstances as though those circumstances are permanent. When we lose our center, we begin reacting to life instead of directing its creation.

In my work, I often encourage people to return to what I call the Four Quadrants of Conscious Creation.

The first quadrant is What Is.

This is the reality currently in front of you. Your finances, your relationships, your health, your opportunities, your challenges, and your environment. This quadrant requires honesty. Just a clear observation of what is actually happening. The shaman must be able to see reality without distortion before any meaningful change can occur.

The second quadrant is What Can Be.

This is the realm of potential. It is the future that is attempting to emerge through you. It is the recognition that reality is always larger than what is visible in the present moment. Every successful business, every healed relationship, every spiritual awakening, every major life transformation existed first as potential before it became experience.

Many people spend so much time analyzing their current circumstances (ie. mainstream psychological approach) that they never give enough attention to possibility. The Andean tradition teaches us to look beyond the visible and to cultivate a relationship with the unseen streams of potential that are already moving beneath the surface of our lives.

The third quadrant is Necessary Action.

Once we become aware of a desired potential, we must take the actions that naturally move us toward it. If you want better health, there are actions that support health. If you want abundance, there are actions that support abundance. If you want love, there are actions that support connection and bonding.

This is where discipline, commitment, responsibility, and conscious choice become important. The universe may respond to intention, but intention is strengthened through aligned action.

Yet there is a fourth quadrant that many people completely overlook.

The fourth quadrant is Unnecessary Action.

At first, this seems contradictory. Why would unnecessary action matter?

Because reality is far more interconnected than the conscious mind can comprehend.

The human brain is remarkable, but it is limited. It can only process a tiny fraction of the information available in any given moment. It attempts to connect events through linear logic, cause and effect, and predictable patterns. Yet life consistently demonstrates that the most important opportunities often arrive through unexpected pathways.

A random conversation changes a career.

An unplanned trip creates a lifelong relationship.

A chance introduction leads to a business partnership.

A simple act of kindness returns years later in ways nobody could have predicted.

The Andean shaman understands that reality is woven together through countless invisible threads. The conscious mind cannot possibly track them all.

This is why unnecessary actions are so powerful.

When we hold a clear intention for what can be, and then engage in activities that are not directly related to the goal, we create space for the subconscious mind and the deeper intelligence of life to begin connecting dots beyond our awareness.

You may take a walk. Visit a new place. Read a book unrelated to your problem. Meet someone for coffee. Attend an event that simply feels interesting. Spend time in nature. Explore something that sparks curiosity.

None of these actions may appear logically connected to the desired outcome. Yet these are often the very actions through which reality reorganizes itself.

From a shamanic perspective, intention sends a signal into the living field of reality. Necessary actions demonstrate commitment to that intention. Unnecessary actions create openness, allowing possibilities to arrive through channels the rational mind could never have designed.

This is why being centered is so important.

Being centered means continuously returning to all four quadrants.

What is happening right now?

What can become possible?

What actions are clearly necessary?

What unnecessary actions might create space for life to surprise me?

When these four quadrants are held simultaneously, life becomes less rigid and more welcoming. We stop forcing reality and begin collaborating with it. We remain grounded in the present while remaining open to possibility. We take responsibility for our actions while trusting that something larger than our conscious mind is also participating in the process.

This is the optimism of the shaman.

Not the belief that everything will automatically work out.

But the certainty that reality contains more possibilities than we can currently see, and that when intention, action, and openness work together, life often finds a way to exceed our expectations.

If you find yourself standing at a crossroads, feeling stuck, uncertain, or unable to see the next step, remember that your current circumstances are only one quadrant of reality. There is also potential, there is action, and there is mystery. Sometimes all that is needed is a return to center so that the larger pattern can reveal itself.

For many years, I have helped individuals, entrepreneurs, leaders, and families navigate these unseen dimensions of life, helping them identify not only what is happening, but what is trying to emerge. If you feel called to explore your own path with greater clarity, purpose, and alignment, I would be honored to support you.
